Units

The curriculum is composed of four independent units that examine the history of Ohio. Each unit deals with some aspect of Ohio’s history and the role of quilts. Information in the units can be used independently or used as an entire unit.  Teacher Resources and related web sites are arranged by subject matter and by grade level to aid in finding appropriate content.

Units currently available at this site:

Unit 1: Ties to Community examines early Ohio settlement and the first inhabitants. The quilts brought to Ohio by it’s earliest settlers were reminders of the people and places they left behind.

Unit 2: Secret Codes or Messages tells the hidden codes found in a quilt created to help students understand the Underground Railroad.

Unit 3: Making a Statement explores the struggle of women for the right to vote and using quilts as a means of making a statement.

Unit 4: Remembering Others brings students into the present with an examination of the NAMES AIDS quilts and other types of quilts used to remember others lives and contributions.  Memorial quilts have been used throughout Ohio’s history and continue to be created today. (Recommended for middle and high school students, due to content covered.)
